Our Heritage

Our Story Began in 1948!

In the aftermath of the devastating Holocaust, a glimmer of hope emerged for approximately 2,500 tailors and their families. These people who had survived the horrors of persecution and displacement and were now faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their shattered lives.

Little did they know that a new opportunity awaited them in Canada, one that would forever change their destinies.

Impakt Foundation for Social Change

The Problem We Set Out to Solve

Impakt’s vision is to become a leading organization for the holistic integration of newly arriving Canadians that honours & strengthens the uniqueness of a diverse, inclusive Canada.

Our Solution

Integrated Newcomer Services (INS) Model

Integrated Newcomer Services (INS) model, developed by the Impakt team and informed by evidence, research, and best practices in integrated care. INS brings together services that already exist but are often scattered across the system, including employment, mental health, community connection, and housing support.

Relationships are the starting point, not paperwork.

  • Community and relationship-building first.
  • Person-centred and equity-driven.
  • Anti-racism, anti-colonial, trauma-informed.
  • Language-friendly and culturally responsive.
  • Strength-based narrative.
  • Belonging as the foundation.
  • We don’t start with forms. We start with trust.

Relationships come first.

Lived experience is leadership

  • Co-design and power-sharing
  • Leadership rooted in lived experience
  • Respect for identity, culture, and language
  • Personalized support and individualized journey maps
  • Success defined by refugees themselves
  • Care for hopes, dreams, and long-term potential

Nothing about us without us

No wrong door. No one walks alone.

  • Holistic, wraparound support (employment, housing, mental health, community)
  • Strong collaboration across partners
  • Simple, accompanied system navigation (not referrals)
  • Continuity from arrival to stability

We don’t send people across systems, we walk with them through it.

We learn, adapt, and improve continuously

  • Real-time learning and iteration
  • “One size does not fit all” approach
  • Ongoing cultural understanding and adaptation
  • Longitudinal evaluation of outcomes
  • Strong community feedback loops

We learn together

Our Approach

For Refugees, By Refugees

Refugees are leaders in our system through Cultural Ambassadors with lived experience. They guide peers, build trust, co-design and deliver programs, and support evaluation and needs assessment. This model embeds lived experience across all stages, improving participation, service relevance, and outcomes in employment, belonging, and stability.
